On this page, I'll write a bit about
the various schools I've taught in
from my first job -- at 21 -- at tiny
Pawnee Heights High Scool in western
Kansas to San Leandro High School in
suburban Oakland, where I've been for
the last 17 years.

I've taught in public high schools,
a juvenile detention center, and a
maximum-security mental hospital.
The differences are less than you
might imagine.
Along the way, I've taught in
four content areas:
English Language Arts
Special Education for the Gifted
English as a Second Languag
Visual Art
and, always,
DRAMA

When I was doing my student
   teaching, back in Oklahoma in
   1975 my supervising teacher,
   the fabulous Cookie Mayhew,
said, " Every year, do something
they can fire you for." So I taught
The Catcher in the Rye, which was
banned at that time. It's been easy
advice to follow. If you teach with
real passion, and teach from a deep
caring for students and the world
they live in, the administration will
   ALWAYS want to fire you.
